Reading

A strong appetite to read will be the most important aspect of any program. Children who have not experienced reading instruction that fits their learning style are often discouraged and do not read more than two minutes per day.

Each literacy skill builds off of the other whether we are trying to master decoding, explain a character’s dilemma, or evaluate the resolution of a plot. Finally, a critical aspect of literacy instruction is to craft lessons that allow children to satisfy their own hunger for understanding the world. Once a student is a fluent reader, she or he becomes their own teacher as they have access to anything they might want to read.

My reading program includes:
  • Narrative and informational texts
  • Comprehension process motion
  • Robust vocabulary instruction
  • Systematic and explicit phonics instruction
